Men's Health Mag has a brief post on the current way to access your body fat. For a long time BMI was the only gauge--which I recommend still using in combination with other assessments for overall health. People can be "skinny fat" (visually skinny but full of unhealthy fat in their body) or vice versa "large 'n healthy" (seem overweight but very fit). So use multiple methods (including listening to your own body, your fitness abilities, analyzing your daily diet) to determine how fit you are.
