A typical Thanksgiving meal can tally up anywhere from 2000 to a whopping 7000 calories. The American Council on Exercise estimates that the typical 160 pound exerciser would need to run at a moderate pace for four hours, swim for five hours or walk 30 miles to burn off the turkey dinner. The best way to burn the most calories is running. However, if those are not your activities of choice, listed below are other activities and the estimated caloric expenditures per hour for a 160 pound man (Larger men will burn more). Women and lighter men will burn fewer calories.
Better yet, if you're in charge of preparing that calorie-loaded meal, choose healthier options and skim down the butter, sugar, and fats in all of your recipes. If you're like me and won't be in charge of your meal, choose the protein! White meat turkey is the leanest and it's the sides that pack on the pounds! My saver will be a nice 7 mile trail run Thanksgiving morning before the festivities start.
*A 1/2 cup of cranberry sauce can be up to 200 calories (chock full of sugar)
*Gravy can have 300-500 calories for 1 cup!
*Mashed potatoes have a whopping 300 calories for 1/2 cup
*Yams average 450 calories for a 1/2 cup
Per hour:
- running (10 minute mile) 704
- shoveling snow 422
- cross country skiing 563
- hatha yoga 281
- swimming 563
- walking the dog 246
- weight lifting 211
- downhill skiing 422

I'm not sure how many of you will attempt to burn off your mashed potatoes on a unicycle, it is an interesting activity to include. Keep in mind that if you give it a try and it doesn't go so well, walking or crutches burn 281 calories per hour.
