Water for weight loss
Tis the season: Studies show the average person gains about a pound between Thanksgiving and January.
Ward it off by drinking water before and with a meal. A NYTimes article hashes out the fact v. fiction:
THE BOTTOM LINE Drinking water before a meal can reduce calorie intake, though the effect seems most prominent in older people.
Why? The article tells about studies on obese groups either drinking water before a meal or not and tracking their weight loss and gain. There was a gap at age 35 though. Participants UNDER the age 35 were significantly less effected in weight by their water intake. Older participants were the subjects who showed the benefit from drinking water before a meal. It's thought to be because the body's metabolism and fat conversion slows with age.
MY TAKE: Just drink lots of water all day long. And try to chug a full glass before you eat--it will help with digestion, fullness, and fiber usage. GULP GULP!
