I completely agree with this article on why it is so important to invest in proper running shoes for YOUR feet. Every body is different--the way you place your feet down & your pressure points are different from your partner's, different from your brothers and your best friend's. Don't rely on the same shoes but rather the shoes that a professional (trained in Biomechanics) exlpains are appropriate for your bodies mechanism in running, your distances, and incriments. Everything starts with your feet--goes to ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, and neck--you're a linear system. Keep yourself healthy!
*ps. for women you're second (or I think first) most important piece of equipment is your sports bra. You don't have to wear two, it shouldn't pinch, poke, chafe, or bounce!! You DO have options.
