Loving Lavender for Aromatherapy

Practitioners of aromatherapy believe that fragrances in the oils stimulate nerves in the nose. Those nerves send impulses to the part of the brain that controls memory and emotion. Depending on the type of oil, the result on the body may be calming or stimulating. The oils are thought to interact with the body's hormones and enzymes to cause changes in blood pressurepulse, and other body functions. Another theory suggests that the fragrance of certain oils may stimulate the body to produce pain-fighting substances.
Specifically, lavender is a common herb in aromatherapy commonly-used herb to treat headaches, also reduces stress and treats depression.
How? Lavender essential oil can be applied to the temples. Mix 4 drops in a tablespoon of base oil (almond or safflower). Massage into temples. Lavender essential oil can also be used in a bath. Use 10 drops in a warm bath. Add 2 drops of orange or lemon oil if you like the scent. Or, use 6 drops of lavender and 4 drops of rosemary.
In a pinch, just sniffing lavender oil may help. If you are prone to migraines, soak a cotton ball with lavender oil and put it in a Ziploc bag. Carry it with you for emergencies.

Lavender (the herb, not the oil) can also be taken as a tea. Use 1 to 2 teaspoons per cup.
