There are a lot of races (both walking and running) popping up all over the country that promote a cause either energetically or monetarily. I found a new one--the San Diego Safari Park (more commonly known as The Wild Animal Park; it was just renamed) half marathon. The event will be on Sunday March 13, 2011 so I have some time to train. What I'm most excited about is the location--the route runs up highway 78 (how you get to the park) then back around some country roads and finishes at the park. Should be gorgeous! The race is only $60 (if you sign up soon; as with most events, admission increases the later you register) and goes to a great cause! Race proceeds will go towards building an exciting new habitat for tigers at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, which will include rocks for climbing, ponds for swimming,

Everyone uses different motivators. Whether it be supporting a cause you believe in, working to get yourself in-shape, helping someone else train, beating your last time, etc. it's a reward system that is natural to animal learning. Go back to basic educational psychology and you'll learn that animals (including humans) will work towards a reward (whether intrinsic--for yourself or extrinsic--an external reward such as a medal at the end of a race). Knowing that you will receive some kind of benefit you deem valuable at the end will motivate you to continue the process until you are satisfied. Runners use multitudes of different motivators. What's mine? It's two fold--push myself to really be a runner again; and get in shape while finally saying I've completed a real race.
What motivates you?
You're going to do awesome at this race! I just know it!! I'm happy you're doing a half :) I know you've always wanted to!
ReplyDeleteWhat motivates me... Myself, the way running makes me feel, weight loss, and it depends on the day. I often will find that I have certain things that motivate me certain days, and other days they change. Strangely enough! Haha, sometimes I'm motivated to run more so I can have something sweet & tasty later :) hahaha.
Thanks Carrie! I'm excited about it. I need something to work towards right now.
ReplyDeleteHaving different motivations is awesome. It mixes it up so you're constantly striving--and in fitness and health there's always room for improvement. I'm so glad to hear you had a great first run this morning! Keep those endorphins flowin'!!
